This is what we heard again and again at ROSCon 2022, so our DDS team decided to share their two decades of DDS expertise with you in an upcoming webinar series and make the knowledge available to everyone.

We’ll start with an in-depth introduction to discover how the DDS technology evolved over the years to become the OMG standard and go-to system for portable, interoperable, distributed, and data-centric middleware. The Charmander version introduces some long-awaited functionalities requested by the Zenoh community over the last few months of 2022. ZettaScale prioritizes listening to our community and building a better product with your support. Our Zenoh Discord channel is active every day and has gained over 600 stars on GitHub. 7 New Key Features for Zenoh in 2023

• Mutual Transport Layer Security (TLS) authentication = no more need to use the user and password authentication! 

The new Zenoh 0.7.0 supports Mutual TLS (mTLS) authentication allowing the router to authenticate incoming TLS connections from clients, peers, or other routers.

• MQTT plugin

 A new plugin facilitates the integration of Zenoh with MQTT. This feature enhances the portfolio of Zenoh routing and storage capabilities, enabling Zenoh clients and peers to talk with MQTT clients.

• S3 storage backend

You can use Zenoh with S3-like storage, e.g. Amazon S3 and MinIO, all thanks to enhanced S3 storage backend capabilities. If you work in IIOT, this will come in handy. 

• Query payload

To simplify and make it more efficient for an application to pass information, Zenoh Charmander can attach some user payload. For example, you can now attach a picture to a query analysed by an object detection algorithm.

• C++ binding

The C++ binding allows you to develop C++ Zenoh applications in your usual desktop/server environment. 

• Connectivity status and notifications

Now, Zenoh has experimental support that exposes connectivity status and notifications. The status and events can be queried or subscribed to.

• MISRA-C compliance for Zenoh-Pico

Zenoh-Pico, the swift communication facilitator for the Microcontrollers has undergone a robust update to comply with MISRA-C safety requirements.

But getting back to this 2022, I can say that it was definitely eventful.

The year started with the frenetic activities to finalize the investment and industrial partnership with TTTech-Auto that eventually led to the birth of ZettaScale, precisely six (6) months ago. 

We had decided to spin-off ZettaScale to accelerate the growth of our team, to better serve our users and establish ZettaScale as the leader in communication software for Robotics and Automotive applications. I know that this sounds bold, but this is our ambition and the goal that every single Zettler is working extremely hard at achieving. Some of our competitors have a head start on the market and are bigger today. But we have far better products, we are leading with extremely cool new technologies, and, it is an undeniable fact, we are by far the most innovative company in this domain. Beside, our team has a track record in providing unparalleled support to customers in some of the most challenging applications — our users know that they can always count on us, especially in hard times. 

Once again, the spin-off could have not been possible without the support and trust that was put in our team by ADLINK and TTTech-Auto – thus, at the end of the year my thoughts and gratitude goes to our investors, shareholders, business and technological partners.

From a product perspective, 2022 has some important highlights for Cyclone DDS and Zenoh.

Cyclone is a DDS implementation we decided to rewrite from scratch a few years ago to capitalize the experience gathered in over 20 years of working with DDS. Cyclone is the most modern, performant and secure DDS implementation on the market. This past year, was rather important for Cyclone DDS since:

• We made very good progress toward ISO-26262 ASIL D certification. This will make Cyclone DDS the first European DDS implementation to be certified and ready to be embedded in the most critical components of an automotive system.  

• We continued to grow Cyclone’s adoption in Robotics. The main drive being that, as many users have reported – when other DDS implementations struggle, Cyclone simply works! 

• We launched the first commercially supported edition of Cyclone, to make sure that our users can leverage some productivity tools and be supported by a strong SLA

Let’s move to Zenoh – a protocol that is set to disrupt the world of connectivity. Zenoh is the only protocol on the market that provides unified abstractions for data in motion and data at rest from the data-center down to the microcontroller. It has a wire-overhead of only 5 bytes, an extremely efficient discovery protocol and incredible performance on high-end as well as extremely constrained hardware and networks. This past year was extremely eventful for Zenoh:

• We ran an extremely successful User Meeting in June, where we had some extremely powerful presentations from users, including Zenoh’s use in autonomous trains!

• Zenoh imposed itself as the protocol for swarming, teleoperation and in general R2X (Robot-to-Anything) communication in the ROS2 ecosystem. 

• As a result of an extremely positive evaluation of Zenoh from Open Robotics, Zenoh was proposed as an alternative to DDS for RMW implementation. In other terms, Zenoh was recommended as an alternative to DDS to solve the problem faced by the latter when running on wireless networks or trying to scale communication across multiple robots.

• Zenoh had several commercial deployments in 2022, in Robotics and beyond. To name a few, Zenoh has been deployed on AGV, Agricultural Robots, PLCs, Distributed Analytics Applications.

• We have started the work to certify Zenoh-Pico toward ISO-26262 ASIL D certification.

Finally, 2022 was a year of organic growth for ZettaScale. We were glad to be able to hire so many talents coming from across the globe to join our team. It is extremely inspiring to see a team of extremely talented and committed people working together to make the difference. We are set for further growth in 2023 and look forward to seeing many more talents joining our team – thus if you are interested reach out!

I want to conclude this 2022 memorandum by wishing all of you a 2023 full of health, joy and success. It will be an extremely important year for us, and we are looking forward to playing at the highest level.

PARIS, FRANCE – Nov 14, 2022 – ZettaScale Technology, an innovator of technologies to communicate, compute and store at any scale, demonstrated its two advanced and highly anticipated protocols at Bosch Connected World 2022 in Berlin and also was present at SIDO and Open Source Experience in Paris.

Bosch Connected World is an annual, international conference and exhibition that brings together the leaders in AIoT and digital transformation. During the Nov 9 – 10 conference in Berlin, the ZettaScale team, in collaboration with the Eclipse Foundation, provided Zenoh-powered robotic demonstrations and Zenoh-Flow for robotics and autonomous vehicle applications. 

Zenoh combines and extends the capabilities found in protocols such as DDS and MQTT (message queuing telemetry transport) with NDN (name data networking) to provide location-transparent abstractions for high performance pub/sub and distributed queries across geo-distributed and heterogeneous storage technologies. It is uniquely positioned to address the ROS1-to-ROS2 transition and challenge the robotics community is facing.

Zenoh-Flow is ZettaScale’s new data-flow framework that facilitates the development of robot swarms and autonomous driving.

The company also was present at the colocated conferences SIDO and Open Source Experience in Paris Nov 8 -9. SIDO is dedicated to the convergence of IoT, artificial intelligence, robotics and XR solutions and technologies for strategic innovation and operational business decision makers. Open Source Experience attracts Europe’s open source community. 

Angelo Corsaro, PhD, CEO/CTO, ZettaScale, was part of a globally-recognized panel of experts at SIDO discussing innovations in robotics, AI, IoT, edge computing and data management. The company was present as part of the Eclipse Foundation’s booth at Open Source Experience. 

Recently, ZettaScale partnered with TTTech Auto to deliver MotionWise Cyclone DDS. The partnership combines TTTech Auto’s TSN and safe real-time software expertise with ZettaScale’s open-source Cyclone DDS. The product will be safety-certified under ISO 26262, and be made available for automotive and non-automotive applications, including those that are a part of ZettaScale’s existing robotics and mission critical markets.

WIth Zenoh and Cyclone DDS, ZettaScale is positioned to serve as a key enabler for R2X and V2X applications. It is producing significant advancements in performance, energy efficiency, scalability and integration.

First, we were impressed by the number of you using Cyclone DDS. It was very energizing to hear from so many happy users. We also learned from the community that (1) Cyclone DDS offers the best off-the shelf user experience on ROS2 Humble, and (2) is the only DDS implementation that allows ROS2 to run on Android.

We’ve also learned that several of you would prefer to have shared-memory communication enabled by default,which in other terms, would mean to automatically start the IceOryx demon. We have already started to discuss this matter and will develop a proposal to the community so that this can be the new default behavior starting with the next release. 

We’ve also received some requests to enhance the coverage of our C++ documentation. The good news is that we already had something in the pipeline related to this. A pull-request is already in process and more is coming.

At ROScon, there were several discussions on adding support for extensibility for ROS2 without necessarily pulling in the full complexity of the OMG DDS X-Types. We will support this design initiative, sharing our experience on dealing with extensibility as well as our in-depth knowledge of DDS X-Types. 

We will also ensure that Cyclone DDS RMW will have support for this extensibility as we move forward with the solution. Likewise, we’ll continue to work hard to ensure that Cyclone DDS is the ROS2 DDS implementation that “just works” – no hick-ups.
